BlissView T8

Explanation
A promotional poster for TL, who happens to be the POC between Singapore and the China supplier for this portable video cam. Me, wenze and TL came up with the model name for it as being an OEM's product, all it has is a model number. As there are more products coming, we decided to give it a Sub-brand - Model Number scheme. Much like "Sanyo Xacti S6", where "Xacti" is the sub-brand and "S6" is the model number. Needless to say, the Sub-Brand would be "BlissView" and model number "T8" in this case. This is to allow easy future naming for additional products in the family.

The selling point of T8 is that it is small and compact, technical spec wise, all I could say is that its a cheap HP video camera replacement, more for fun and daily live video clips. Thus I tried to made it as classy looking as possible in this poster. Unlike Mini3 (in which the specs are important), I eliminated most text from the poster to achieve the "classy", "trendy", "stylish" effect.



Inspiration
From other product posters where emphasis on the exterior designs are important. Normally you would see the item in many views on a glossy surface with its reflection in it.

Explanation
This was once a rejected artwork done up in 2005 or 2006, but I managed to do some digital restoration and packaging and now its much more presentable. Used it in my portfolio to La Salle.



Inspiration
I was inspired while being alone in school during a cooling rainy day. I always preferred tranquillity over excitedness.

Futboltees

Explanation
A low cost logo design for my friend Frank Poh who wanted to start his soccer tee shirt business. He wanted something simple and of less colour (affects printing cost), and this logo was initially designed in BnW to make sure that the effects isnt lost.



Inspiration
The usage of silhouettes in various logo design when people figures are just supporting elements, and placing many of them "simulate" what is like to be crowded without stealing lime light from the prime design. Eg, an interior design where the the rooms are shown and silhouettes of ppl are just there to simulate how its like when ppl are living in that room.

Dreams

Explanation
Strictly speaking, this is a tech demo on how effective Pen tool is at extracting contents from its picture. This montage is made of about 17 individual pictures. Meanwhile, I just wanted to put various totally unrelated elements together, to create this picture that will wow ppl when shown, probably by the level of how ridiculous the montage is. Despite Singaporeans are typically "No Nonsense" and have little tolerance to offset doings and thinkings, I feel that you will never attain creativity or breakthrough that way.



Inspiration
Using pen tool to extract my customer's photo for special effect processing during my ex-job.

Article 1: Concept Poster for Mini3




Article 2: Online Brochure




Explanation
Article 1 features a concept poster for AMB Lab's Mini3 portable headphone amplifier (distributed by HohoDIY). It means that the actual Mini3 DO NOT look like that, the picture shows a mock up of an aesthetically improved version of Mini3. The face plate is similar to what i designed for HohoDIY earlier on, in which the distributor informed me that they will be produced once the stock of the current face plates run out. The chassis's engraving as well as gold plated screws are simulated too.

Article 2 is an online brochure for Mini3. It features the actual Mini3 product photo. It simplifies my task by providing relevant pictures and features on the brochure, so that i can show it my customers through digital means to aid in promotion of the product. Furthermore, they are meant to be viewed in this native resolution you see above, so that it can be placed in forums and blogs without having to resize it.



Inspiration
Inspired by nothing much in particular, probably just the outlook of other electronic products.

Explanation
This is a revamp of the the original Mini3 headphone amplifier face and rear plates. The original face plate look like:

My distributor told me that it will be produced and use when the current stock of face and read plates run out. Only the dimensions and vector file was handed to the distributor in TW, there is no instructions on how the machines will read and form the plates.

Explanation
A project for VR-Zone. Its a package to support their Club VR project, that is a paid membership program for VR-Zoners. My part of the project consist of
1. Re-Vectoring the original VR-Zone logo, which was previously in raster
2. Main task, to design a new logo for Club VR
3. Subsequently, develop a membership card design from there
4. Aid in graphically designing the website.

This logo is exclusively designed for Club-VR to promote its membership and let the public be more aware of Club-VR from VR-Zone. The suggested theme for the logo is Happiness and Vibrancy.

A cartoon eye, which along the path of logo development termed as Eyelet, is a modification of the original Eye Design of the VR-Zone logo. Lighter and more saturated blues are used for the frame of the eye, while a soft skin tone was used for inside the Eyelet. The Eyelet has only one pupil, simply because logically Eyelet itself is already an eye and not practical to have two pupils inside one eye.

The Eye Design represents VR-Zone, as Club VR is a branch from it. While a happy cartoon portray of the Eyelet represents a happy VR-Zoner. A simple example of such a situation would be a contented customer which gets discount and good service when producing the Club-VR card during his purchase of computer hardware. A hard shadow is dropped behind the logo to make it stands out in front of light backgrounds.

Behind the Eyelet is a globe showing Asian region maps. Upon closer inspection, you will be able to see the location on the globe where Singapore is glittering, suggesting that VR-Zone and Club-VR are both based in Singapore. The globe is behind the Eyelet, suggesting that Club-VR is always in front of the world, always updated and always top-notched. A ‘V’ shaped bounce path beside Eyelet shows Club-VR moving towards and along with the rest of the world. The globe is of a darker shade of blue, which provides a contrast between the globe and the Eyelet, creating a foreground-background layered feel.

An simple outlined styled Text “Club-VR”, is added in to notify the name of the club for recognition purpose.

Article 4: Unofficial Alternate VR-Zone Logo, was actually the first draft to the Club VR logo. The whole cold and evil concept of Club VR was abolished and replaced with what you see in Article 1. Not to put this developed first draft to waste, the text was changed to 'VR-Zone' and showcased as an unofficial alternate VR-Zone logo.



Inspiration
The logo was inspired by the original VR-Zone logo in mind. It was purposely meant to have similar elements so that viewers will know immediately the two (VR-Zone and Club VR) are related.

Crossroads MylarOne X3i

Explanation
This is a straight forward advertisement i made for the Mylar IEMs. Simple for fun, and also to support the product. I had yet to see any adverts for Mylar, so i decide to make one myself.

The earphones itself are vectorized, along with all other things u see in this poster. Meaning to say resizing will never be a problem. I took a pic of the earphones from the forum and use to to trace and reproduce an illustration in vector form. Normally photographs of product are used in adverts, but due to constraints (no studio, no macro lens, no good skills, no time...) i tot of taking up the challenge of producing a detailed illustration instead.

As CrossRoads, at the moment of writing, do not really have got a logo, i decided to mock one up as well, adding to the overall aesthetics.

Feel free to use this poster, can put on blog, can print out paste on wall, can put as wallpaper, just remember dun anyhow claim it as yours or edit it without my permission. I wun edit unless its officially used. Contact me if u need anything. Rocking Together For Life

Explanation
A group of five good friends together - blissful. This shows that friendship is a simple pleasure in life, but not everyone got this chance to be by a friend all the time. So treasure your times with friends.

This piece started off with Kyro asking me how to convert hand drawing to digital image. She drew some chibi like cartoons in pencil and wanted to scan into computer for further editing, like relining, colouring...etc. I thought of the Live Trace feature in Adobe Illustrator, but soon gave up on the idea as it dun work out as nice. So i suggested re drawing the whole picture in vector form in Illustrator instead.

She passed me a sample, and i did a demo for her:

Its suppose to be a drawing of The Gazette, a jRock band, which Kyro is a fan of. She took the weekend to complete the hand drawing of all five band members:

Except for the 4B peepz in VS, i dint meet any one in my life who can draw, (what i mean by "can draw" means at least produce a decent simple sketch of stuffs which in one look ppl know what u drawing). So i tot Kyro was quite talented, and help vectorised and put everything into a poster for her. Yup, and this artwork is of course dedicated to Kyro!

I myself know nuts about jRock (cos i prefer mRock more), so after illustrating the five members, i put them up in a nice background and added a tagline of my own - Rocking Together For Life, Cos We Are Lucky To Have Us. I conveyed the idea to Yue Ting, she was the one who tot of the whole tagline. Thanks Yue Ting! Not forgetting its suppose to be a chibi version of The Gazette, i added their names on the design.



Inspiration
Why "Rocking Together For Life"? Cos its smthing i want to have. I want my good friends to be with me... But a lot of times either they got other commitment or they dun treat me as a good friend. Thats why i so lonely...Every weekend got to cry at home myself. I hope one day i will be happy like the five ppl inside the pic.. Hope hope, but it will never come true. Depress...

Lilies of Ethereality

Explanation
Its pretty simple: a tranquil scene at a lotus or water lily pond. Perhaps Im trying to cheer myself up from the recent trauma from NS by portraying a little paradise for me to hide myself? Also this piece to specially dedicated to someone.



Inspiration
Inspired from a name of a person. Also from an online tutorial which teaches how to make the petals from Blending. In the tutorial is another flower, but later i tot of making lotus flower form the same technique. I always see the semi transparent effect when sunlight pass thru water lily's petal. Credits to Samuel Liu from my sec 4 VS Art Elective class for detailed critic and coming up with the name "Lilies of Ethereal", then renamed "Lilies of Ethereality" by Yue Ting.

The petals of the flowers are drawn by splitting the petal outline into two symmetrical parts, then use the Blend tool in Illustrator to gradually change the shape and colour of the lines from one part to another. There can be like 100 lines in between two parts. U can also see similar pattern of lining design on an actual lotus flower. As its made of lines, there are empty space in between, making it look translucent from far.

The sunshine is made from Flare tool.

Loved VS The Hated

Explanation:
The most eye catching object in this piece is the bomb. Its those kinda of drop off bomb from planes and jets. If u look a little longer, u will pay attention to the couple in front. Yup, the big war and fights are often highlighted, but the small small lovely couple is just simply missed out. As the bomb is reaching the ground, the couple held hands and await doom. The chances of survival is very slim, but yet being able to die under the warmth of of love is much better than dying alone. Notice the girl is holding the guy's hand, in which the norm should be the other way round. Cos i believe neither the guy nor gal should sacrifice more for each other, rather it should be mutual. The gal should protect and calm the guy when the time comes.



Inspiration:
Yes, i do believe in hatred and revenge, but alot of times the power of love can rival with the power of hatred. Even if Love do not win Hatred, Love is noble enough to protect and stay by one another even when the world ends.

I had seen a lot of cases where guys got hurt (mentally or physically) during NS, and it devastated their families and friends as well. Also there are lots of cases where during the torment period, there isnt even anybody by his side to take care of him.

Love from a couple can be greater than any 1000mm round SAF can buy. National Service really drains a lot from any NSF, how sinful. The big big war everyone can see. The small small love no body cares.

Hatred is powerful. Love is noble.

The bomb, guy and girl are drawn in Illustrator, the usual way of shaping the objects like tablets, Pen tool and preset shapes. I used light desaturated colours this time, instead of my usual dark desaturated schemes. Im trying to mimic the cartoon style from Kawaii Not, noticing that the artist use a lot of light and eye smoothing colours. Although he goes about drawing borderless, i stick to having thick outline on my cartoon figures as well as some slight shading.

The polluted sky and smokes are make using the usual round brush. But what i did was to introduce some scattering, opacity jitter, size jitter, softness, spacing them out, mix between grey and dark grey... Then brushing them in circles to look like smoke or clouds, and finally applying blur. Gaussian blur to smokes and motion blur to the polluted sky. Duplicating the layers will make the effect stands out more.

The fire is done similarly to the smoke/clouds, but using a course bristle brush to simulate the flares coming from fire. Colours include yellow and dark orange. I notice that the outer side of the fire is often daker in colour than the inside. And fire is not red, its orange and yellow most of the time. Shadowing and inner glows and duplicating the same layers are used to make things more fiery.

The buildings in the bg is just simple rectangles with grunge brushes painted on, and duplicated many many times and manually varying its sizes and rotation.

Inspiration
It started off with the idea of broken transparent pieces, which i used to make the SoftGloss MoonShell skin. Then through lots of trial and errors, i got hold of a nicer patterns of the pieces, the amount of shadow, stroking, glowing, gradients and opacity all matters a lot. The background was a sudden inspiration by the though of desaturating and darkening all the rainbow rainbow colours, and split the columns apart.

Kawaii Kingston

Explanation
This is the second poster in the same year for VR-Zone. I was shocked when the theme “kawaii” was given to me. My pieces are mostly dark and sad and how do I bring the kawaii-ness out? I though cartoon character maybe the best approach. I started trying out Adobe Illustrator (vector drawing program) and mimic the style some cartoons drawn on some websites.

December gave me the idea of a bunny which was later on not used due to bad drawing. The Lion was inspired by one of Su Yee’s emoticon on MSN. The Tomato idea came from Tomato (my cousin) herself. Idea of Zhu came from my boss’s childhood love for Porky Pig.

Froggie

Explanation
Through thousands of years of evolution, this wooden dead frog sculpture actually comes back to live. Not only that, it had grew body parts that were not there. It now has horns of a rhinoceros, eyes of a chicken, toady’s skin, butterfly’s make up, sucking a magic mouth ball and growing strange patterns on the back. (The mouth ball is actually a macro shot of a toad’s large eye).

Its just like human, we grow different personalities and change ourselves in different environments. We “upgrade” ourselves frequently to suit this changing world. But did anyone realized that the more you change the more “alien” you become? Some even lost humanity in this tensed society. Are you ready for change?

I Mug I God

Explanation
Yet again another Illustrator work. Inspired and drawn using pencils during boring GP lecture, then re-drawn in Illustrator.

I feel that nowadays in Singapore education, a lot of things depend on how much you study. Its not even how smart you study but merely how you get your A’s in examinations. Thus muggers are often at the advantage, but some mug so much that they had forgotten all about life and their actual aspiration and purpose of life. Thus once you mug, you become god-like. Even devils become gods when they mug.

Onion Myself

Explanation
This is supposed to be meant for 0705students.blogspot. This yellow Onion actually resembles the College badge, though the colours are not of the correct tone. Note the “myself” head band.

The underlying meaning is on if students in College really have to mug to live. Is College life just mugging? Why the Onion looks so sad?

Explanation
This is a gift to my computing teacher, My Kho on Teachers’ Day 2006. Its not computer graphics, but rather from ink sprayer, where the machine will spray droplets of ink and you use stencils and some creativity to spray out an image. I sprayed the designed onto the card gift, then scanned in. Created the "noisy" effect like those in high ISO or nite badly taken photos.

The term “noisy” refers to visible droplets component of the image (which resembles digital nose in cameras) and celebration refers to the joy of Teachers’ Day. Its actually quite tiring for eyes to see so many bits of different colour, but they merge to form a harmonic picture.(Ya the holiday given to us!)

Eskimo Party 2006

Explanation
Under Wen Yan’s recommendation, VR-Zone asked me to design their even poster. That was also the first time im doing graphical design sort of commercially. That was the first time when my poster will be seen by the public and going to be printed in larger medium.

The idea is to use the glossy icons seen in GUIs to list out the different sub-events. The icy-metallic text was done using Patterns and Wind to create the icicle effect.

Overall its really fun, more fun than other part time jobs, and I need not step out of my house to design my master piece!

The event icons are inspired by those glossy icons used in software.

Voodoo Sensation

Explanation
The picture is taken from this voodoo doll bought from Mini Toons. “恨” was drawing using brushes in Photoshop. This is one of my favorite pieces.

I wanted to express hatred of someone in College, as well as my not-so-smooth years in over there. As in no one understood me expect for this voodoo doll I had, it knows exactly what I felt – HATRED. Isn’t blood beautiful?

Equalise My Life

Explanation
The original concept was to re-design my mp3 player (iAudio G3), so that it has more buttons, larger screen and a joypad instead of a joystick. Later I added in the GUI. The mp3 player shows no equalization, equalizing a sound is to adjust the frequency bands to make it sound better.

Thus in here a teenager’s school life in Singapore is just like music with no equalization – bland. With additional “enhancements” of life with all the various demanding subject. Even when a student is tired (battery 000%), he still must go on…

The Gladiator

Explanation
This is the poster for the bloster fight for Family Day. The game is about two or more persons using foam sticks to hit each other until the paper ball stuck on the top of the helmet drops.

The backing of the main text is actually a copy of the text itself, but with Mosaic and several other Blending Options. The images of the gladiators and arena are stock photographs.

Basically I used two main colours, brown and grey. Brown to bring out the "ancient" feeling of Roman Gladiators and silver grey to bring out the old metallic feeling of the weapons. The two heads facing each other signify that a fight is about to begin and the background shows an arena.

Sword fighters from medieval times.

Scratched Creativity

Explanation
I was instructed to design an open house poster for cXtreme near year end. Having mental block, I consulted Qiao Yun on ideas and uses of brushes. This is inspired by one of my Baleno Tees, which is also the first time im touching grunge design and extensive using of brushes. The main title uses contrasting gradients and shades to make it eye catching. The blue texts are Stroked and then erased off partially to achieve the result. I worked from 10pm to 4am the next day to complete this poster in time.



Inspiration
Last minute work, inspired by the breath of time under my neck.

Nitely Moonbow

Explanation
Moonbows are rarely natural phenomenon. Their formations require bright moon light and the correct shine angle. The one in my artwork is merely my impression about moonbows, their beauty in the night like a shine of hope in darkness, when I just entered College.



Inspiration
This is one of my very first artwork inspired by my classmate’s MSN nick on moonbows, which was later drawn with some references to a tutorial on falling autumn leaves by Tsun Lam.

The grasses and glowing buzzing bugs are merely brushes, the night sky was adapted from a day blue sky Photoshop tutorial. The moonbow is simply arched gradient and the moon is spherical Render Clouds. The two birds are dots that are smudged on the sides.
